The Crane over the Motława: A Pearl of Architecture
Strolling along the Long Wharf next to our apartments, you will very quickly come across a huge, dark construction rising over the water. This is the Crane – one of the most characteristic buildings for which Gdańsk is famous.
What was the Crane used for?
Built in the 15th century, it served not only for the city's defense, but above all was a bustling mechanism for raising masts and loading goods onto sailing ships. Inside it, there were powerful wooden treadwheels, driven by the strength of human muscles!By choosing accommodation in our apartment on Granary Island, you can admire the beautifully illuminated Crane reflecting in the waters of the Motława every evening. We invite you to discover the history of Gdańsk together with Residences Gdańsk.
